Michael Emerson is the Allyn & Gladys Cline Professor of Sociology at Rice University, where he is Co-Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research. In addition to many research articles, he is the author or co-author of 10 books, including the award winning Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America and People of the Dream: Multiracial Congregations in the U.S.

His most recent book—Transcending Racial Barriers—addresses solutions to racial inequality and alienation. His talk today will focus on how race works in the contemporary U.S.
